A high-intensity interval format of 20 seconds of maximal effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for 8 rounds (4 minutes total per exercise). Tabata is one of the few interval structures with a specific named research study behind its exact timing — the 20/10 split isn't an arbitrary convention, it's what the original protocol tested.

Tabata air squats: round 1 — 14 reps, round 2 — 13 reps, round 3 — 12 reps... by round 8, fatigue drops output to 8 reps. Total score: sum of all 8 rounds. A rep-count drop of roughly 40-50% from round 1 to round 8 is typical and expected at genuinely maximal effort — a flat rep count across all 8 rounds usually means the first rounds weren't actually maximal.

Limites connues
- •True Tabata effort is extremely demanding — the original research protocol was tested on trained athletes at an intensity most self-coached athletes underestimate. A Tabata done at a comfortable pace isn't really a Tabata, it's just a 4-minute interval circuit.
- •8 rounds of genuine maximal effort produces a rep-count curve, not a flat number — comparing only the total across sessions can mask whether early-round pacing changed even when the total looks similar.
- •The name gets applied loosely in general fitness content to any short work/rest interval, which dilutes its specific meaning as the exact 20s/10s x 8 structure from the original protocol.

The protocol traces to Izumi Tabata's 1996 study on Olympic speed skaters, which compared steady-state moderate-intensity training against 20s-on/10s-off intervals at ~170% VO2max for 4 minutes, 5 days a week. The high-intensity group saw larger gains in both aerobic and anaerobic capacity than the steady-state group over 6 weeks. Popular fitness use of 'Tabata' has broadened well past the original study's exact intensity and athlete population — the timing structure is faithful to the research, but most gym-floor Tabatas are not performed at the near-maximal intensity the original protocol tested.
